Osseous Surgery
If you are in need of osseous surgery, you are suffering from periodontal disease.
Osseous surgery is a surgical procedure to remove calculus and plaque, (harden bacteria) the active infection that resides in your gum pockets. A silent, deathly disease linked to hundreds of systemic diseases, like cardiovascular issues, Alzheimer’s and diabetes.
This harmful bacteria that is accumulated in your gum pockets causes deep and uneven pockets. If this bacteria isn’t removed, your gums will continue to be inflamed, the bacteria will continue to eat at your bone, causing further bone loss that leads to tooth loss. Since this bacteria isn’t easily removed by regular or deep cleanings, Osseous surgery in conjunction to bone regeneration is the most effective procedure to treat gum disease, reducing the depth of your gum pockets and helping bring the area back to health. Dr. Ribeiro whose specialty is in the health of gums and bone loss prevention, specializes and performs osseous surgery often.
Here is what to expect:
Some patients may need localized osseous surgery on certain areas, some may need treatment on all quadrants of the mouth. Dr. Ribeiro will expose the area of treatment, using ultrasonic instruments and scaler he will remove the calculus that surrounds the teeth and root surface.
The bone surrounding the teeth is reshaped, smoothened, and grafted (adding additional bone) to recreate a favorable boney architecture, in addition to placing a membrane dressing. Dr. Ribeiro will suture the area and post-op instructions will be reviewed.
After 2-3 months of healing, your gum pockets will be reduced, creating an environment where your mouth has a better chance of recovering from the damage caused by periodontal disease. It’s very critical that patients keep up with their 3 month periodontal maintenance visits, routine periodontal dental cleanings, to promote and sustain results.
